THANK YOU!!
Enjoying the post-hurricane sunshine, a crowd numbering well over a thousand throughout the day came out to Victoria Row on Sunday, September 5 to take in the sights, tastes, and sounds of the 2nd Annual Nigwek: Festival for an Organic PEI.
15 of the very best musical acts PEI has to offer graced the stage, Island organic farmers marketed the new harvest’s produce in the street, and a slew of speakers led by Chef Michael Smith spoke about the necessity for PEI to work toward becoming a fully organic province.
“By successfully transforming ourself into an organic province we will become one of the world’s leading places to live, work, raise a family, achieve entrepreneurial success and enjoy a healthy, safe lifestyle,” Smith said during his keynote address from stage. “All sectors of our economy will flourish and our environment will heal. In particular our tourism industry will benefit rapidly and dramatically.”
Taking its name from a Mi’kmaq word meaning “something good is growing,” Nigwek proved that there is indeed truth behind the name, as one of the first Fall Flavours 2010 signature events entertained many, and successfully raised funds for a bursary for organic agriculture education, issued through the PEI Certified Organic Producers’ Coop.
